Meet Your Tutor
I'm James Overly, a Biology and Neuroscience graduate from the University of Kentucky and a 525 MCAT scorer.
My score breakdown was:
132 Chemical & Physical Foundations
129 CARS
132 Biological & Biochemical Foundations
132 Psychological, Social & Biological Foundations
Beyond the MCAT, I have spent years conducting Alzheimer's disease research and presenting scientific work at national and international conferences.
My tutoring philosophy is simple: most students don't need more information—they need a better system for applying what they already know.
I work one-on-one with students to identify weaknesses in content mastery, passage strategy, timing, and review habits, then build a personalized approach designed to maximize score improvement.
The MCAT isn’t just a content exam—it’s a reasoning test. Many students spend months memorizing facts only to feel stuck when their scores don’t improve. In my experience, the biggest score gains come from learning how the test is written, how questions are constructed, and how to make confident decisions under time pressure.
My sessions focus on understanding patterns in mistakes, improving review systems, and developing strategies that carry over from one practice test to the next. Rather than overwhelming students with more material, I help them use what they already know more effectively.
How I Approach MCAT Tutoring
Sessions are collaborative and tailored to each student’s needs. We might work through passages together, review a recent full-length exam, refine timing strategies, or focus on a specific section like CARS or C/P. Before each session, I take time to understand where you’re at so we can use our time efficiently.
The goal is not just to perform better during our sessions, but to leave with tools and approaches you can apply independently between meetings.
What Working Together Looks Like
Who This Is a Good Fit For
Tutoring With James is a good fit for students who are motivated to improve and willing to reflect on their approach to studying. Many of the students I work with feel like they’re putting in the time but not seeing the results they expect.
If you’re looking for a more intentional, strategy-focused approach to MCAT prep—rather than a one-size-fits-all curriculum—this style of tutoring is likely a good match.
If you’re not sure where to start, I recommend booking a free 30-minute strategy call. We’ll talk through your goals, your current approach, and whether tutoring makes sense for you.
